Welcome to our weekly quality improvement support series for 2022.
“It’s our polite nudge in the ribs to help you and your team stay organised and on task.”
This week’s subject is: Nappy change and toileting
Element 2.1.2: Health practices and procedures. Effective illness management and hygiene practices are promoted and maintained
Educators must ensure that toileting and nappy change routines and practices are conducted in ways that ensure the health and hygiene of children and staff, whilst ensuring their interactions with children are warm and responsive and maintain the dignity and rights of the children in their care.
Does your service have nappy changing procedures displayed in appropriate areas, visible to staff during nappy changing? A nappy change poster/display can be printed, laminated, and displayed in prominent positions at all nappy change areas at the service.
Ensure that hand washing procedures are displayed in nappy change areas and all bathrooms and are at eye level to children. Use colourful posters with visual aids to spark children’s interest and consider implementing a hand washing song within your room or across your service.
Out of School Hours Care:
OSHC services using shared toilet facilities must ensure that children are provided with appropriate, hygienic facilities whilst ensuring adequate supervision with consideration for the dignity and rights of the child. In school age care settings, educators can maintain supervision by monitoring when children enter and exit bathrooms. Services must ensure that children always have access to soap and drying facilities (r109).
