Welcome to our weekly quality improvement support series for 2024.
“It’s our polite nudge in the ribs to help you and your team stay organised and on task.”
This week’s subject is: Medical conditions policy.
Element 2.1.2: Effective illness and injury management and hygiene practices are promoted and implemented.
Does your service have a current policy and procedure for medical conditions that all staff and parents of an enrolled child (with a diagnosed health care need or medical condition) have read, understand and are familiar with?
Approved providers must ensure that their service has a policy and procedure for dealing with medical conditions in children, even if they have no children with a medical condition at the service (r90). The policy must detail:
-
- The requirement for parents and carers to provide and maintain a medical management plan for their child
- The requirement for the medical management plan to be followed in the event of an incident relating to the child’s specific health care need, allergy or medical condition
- Procedures and information for staff and volunteers about how to manage the condition
- Information for parents/carers on their involvement in developing a risk minimisation and communication plan in consultation with the service
- For services providing care to school age children:
- information and procedures for self-administration of medication by children (if permitted at the service)
- recording a notification when a child has self-administered medication
The policy must be:
-
- understood and followed by all educators, staff, volunteers and the nominated supervisor
- easily accessible at all times, and a copy given to all parents of a child enrolled at the service who has a diagnosed health care need, allergy or relevant medical condition.
