Welcome to our weekly quality improvement support series for 2022.
“It’s our polite nudge in the ribs to help you and your team stay organised and on task.”
This week’s subject is: Safe sleep and rest
Element 2.1.1: Wellbeing and Comfort
Each child’s wellbeing and comfort is provided for, including appropriate opportunities to meet each child’s need for sleep, rest and relaxation.
- Does your Service regularly conduct a safe sleep audit to ensure effective practices are being implemented to ensure children’s safety during sleep and rest?
- Have you recently reviewed your Sleep and Rest Policy and Procedure to ensure its currency and consistency with advice from Red Nose?
Approved providers, nominated supervisors and educators have a duty of care to ensure children are provided with a high level of safety when sleeping and resting and every reasonable precaution is taken to protect them from harm and hazard.
Conducting a regular sleep audit will assist your Service to assess the physical environment and the practices implemented during sleep and rest routines. An audit will document and provide evidence of your Service’s safe sleep practices as well as determine any areas of improvement.
As we know, each child is different and has varying needs, this is especially relevant when it comes to children’s need for sleep and rest. Ensure your Service practices reflect an understanding of this by providing the opportunity and environment for children to sleep for their required periods and provide alternate quiet experiences for children who do not require sleep/rest.
