Element 6.1.2: Parent views are respected
The expertise, culture, values and beliefs of families are respected, and families share in decision-making about their child’s learning and wellbeing.
Element 6.1.2 focuses on the importance of showing respect for the individual cultures, beliefs and values of families by providing them with opportunities to:
- share in decision making about their child’s learning and wellbeing
- provide feedback about the educational program and service operations
- exchange information about their child’s individual needs
- discuss and exchange information about their child’s progress
- share their values and expectations for their child’s learning and wellbeing
- contribute to the documentation of their child’s learning and wellbeing
- contribute to curriculum decision making
- make suggestions about routines, transitions and activities
- provide feedback about their child’s experiences
How does your service keep a record of family feedback and apply feedback to ensure continual improvement?
Feedback can be obtained from families in many different forms. It’s important that services recognise the importance of continuously requesting feedback from families on children’s learning and wellbeing, as well as other aspects of the service operations, including transitions, routines, Service policies and the Service Philosophy. This can be done formally through:
- parent surveys
- suggestions box
- online forum, inviting parents to provide feedback by asking specific questions
- providing space on the program for feedback
- requesting feedback via the Service newsletter
Feedback can be (and often is) obtained from families through informal discussions. Be sure to request parent’s permission to document this feedback. Services should document and keep a record of all methods of feedback.
